Triloke Kaul
Sri Triloke Kaul belonged to the first generation of
artists who formed the Progressive Artists Association of Kashmir. To his
generation belonged the artists like Shri. P.N. Kachru (Rainawari), Late Sh.
Somnath Bhat (from Ganpatyar, first and foremost a landscape painter), Ghulam
Rasul Santosh (who earned a name through his Tantric style of painting), Sh.
Bansi Parimu (from Habbakadal, a flamboyant and articulating personality, was
popularly known in Srinagar as Bansi artist), and Nisar, a neighbour of
Santosh in his Banamoholla area, and last but not least Smt. Kishori Kaul.

Triloke Kaul (from Shala Kadal near Karfali Moholla) studied
painting at Maharaja Sayaji Rao University of Baroda. He was director of
School of Design (Exhibition grounds, Sgr.) That was an institution to promote
and give new impetus to Kashmiri handicrafts.
His approach to painting also originated from landscape.
Primarily the architecture of Kashmiri houses in space set his fantasy free.
Throughout he remained true to the cubistic, analytic procedure to solve the
problems of space, movement and colour. What first seemed to be a patch of
colour on canvas, soon developed into a motion that immediately arrested your
whole attention He kept calculating like a mathematician all the steps needed
to solve the problem.
It should be remarked here that the huge work of paintings he
had to leave behind in Srinagar is our cultural loss.
