Born in Srinagar (Kashmir) on 5th November,1957, Subhash Premi is the
son of well-known Kashmiri writer Late
Pt. Prem Nath Premi who baptized him into the world of Art and Literature.
Though he did not study Hindi beyond 8th Standard, he adopted this (National)
language as the medium of his expression. Soon he became a sought-after Hindi
lyricist – a rare breed in the valley. A number of his lyrics were picturised
/ telecast by Doordarshan Kendra, Srinagar. In fact, his very first lyric for
this TV Centre "SHANKAR TERE NAAM HAZAAR" became immensely popular and
found its way to the archives of the centre. Well-known artistes of the valley
and outside including Rajinder Kachroo, Vijay Malla, Kailash Mehra, Pandita
brothers - Dr. Vinod and Dr. Ashwani, Pankaj Jeswani, S. Sanyal, Nishikant
Bali (Canada) have rendered their melodious voices to the simple, sweet and
lilting lyrics penned by Sh. Premi under the pen-name of "Suman".
An enthusiastic and zealous worker for the propagation of Hindi literature in
the valley, he became the youngest ever General Secretary of KASHMIR HINDI
SAHITYA SAMMELAN – a pioneer organization of the valley in the field of Hindi
literature, at the age of 17. In 1983, he migrated to Faridabad (near Delhi)
where he gained popularity in the field of Hindi-ghazal. Most of his poems got
published in reputed magazines, newspapers and poetry-collections. Besides, a
number of his poems were broadcast by different stations of All India Radio.
He has also edited several magazines/ poetry-collections.
Among his other interests – he has a passion for music, especially for
percussion or rhythm instruments. As a member of the orchestra conducted by
the legendary musician Pt. Bhajan Sopori (for Radio-Kashmir), he is credited
with the introduction of Congo Drums in Kashmiri music. This passion for
music stood him in good stead while writing songs which delighted music
composers for sheer lyrical quality.
